The reason Catie and I walked to Panchlaish was so that we could have a “picnic” Iftar dinner (which we bought on the street along the way). The roof of Panchlaish is really nice and the building is right next to the jungle (as far as I can tell) so you can hang out up there until it gets dark and then watch for bats overhead. Dinner was delicious – I really hope I can get another chicken roll even after Ramadan is over – and I had a great time hanging out up there, taking photos, and watching people on the street below. We did see a number of large bats but I was too distracted trying to take pictures of some people working on a car at night, so my bat-capturing efforts were somewhat halfhearted. We’ll have to go back and try again sometime soon.

A few days ago Catie and I took a trip to Aarong which is a large fair trade store featuring clothes and art made by local women. It was a really cool place and I got a few things for myself there including a couple brass figurines – a bull and a crow – and two t-shirts: one with neon dinosaur skeletons on it and the other with an awesome silhouette drawing of crows perched on power lines (which based on my personal experience of Chittagong so far is the perfect encapsulation of the city). It didn’t take long for me to incidentally take a photo that looks almost exactly like my new shirt. I’m just missing that pink kite.

My camera still hasn’t made it down to the streets of Chittagong, but I’m trying to make the most of our roof in the meantime. I expect a long and complicated relationship to develop between myself and the throngs of gray-brown Bengali crows that inhabit this city.

Catie and I took a moment to do the “hey pose in front of that _____!” thing, and posed on our roof in front of the nearby mosque. Clearly I could only take it seriously for about 20 seconds though, and as the f-stop increased, so did the ridiculousness of my expression.

I’m still pretty far from feeling comfortable with the idea of bringing my camera out on the streets of Chittagong, so in the meantime I expect a number of photos to be taken from inside our apartment and on top of our roof.
