Victory Day parade

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

In honor of Victory Day, the students of AUW held a parade in the neighborhood around campus. Armed with signs, banners, and a great deal of red and green clothes and face paint, they marched out the driveway onto M.M. Ali Road and then made their away around the entire extended block (actually a triangle), singing and chanting the entire way. Unsurprisingly, the large group of vibrant vocal young women garnered a great deal of interest from the local residents, most of which stopped whatever they were doing as the procession passed, and some of which even got up and started to follow along the sides (taking as many camera phone pictures and videos as they possibly could along the way).

After the students (and several participating staff and teachers) returned to campus, they continued to celebrate in the AUW driveway for quite a while. They sang songs, recited poetry, and took many pictures to remember the joyous event. The excess of color, noise, and positive energy flowing out of the huge group was a great symbol of the massive potential contained in such a passionate female student body that the university is working to help develop and enable to flourish. I promise I am not getting paid to write that questionably run-on sentence! It is just undeniably inspiring to see the power of AUW students in motion, especially in mass.

Catching up on life in Chittagong

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

As I mentioned in my previous post, a lot has happened in the last couple months. I’m afraid that if I don’t maintain some sense of chronology that whatever I skip will fall into the digital cracks forever (sorry Nepal, but that means you’re going to have to wait a little while), so I thought I’d start off with a general potpourri of our day-to-day lives in Chittagong. Included in the group of images below is the inaugural students vs. faculty basketball game, a surprise birthday party for Michelle Zjhra (the Dean of Undergraduate Studies at AUW), a few street shots, and of course a few of Catie (doing what Catie does best: casting looks, casting spells, and enjoying snacks).

I’ve got cabin fever! (I’ve got it toooo!)

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

I swear I’m still not complaining, but did I mention that our boat ride on the Karnaphuli River lasted almost 9 hours? I thoroughly enjoyed the trip but there is no denying the fact that Catie and I started to exhibit some serious Muppet Treasure Island style cabin fever as the night wore on.

A brilliant scene from the movie Muppet Treasure Island featuring the song “Cabin Fever”.

I think everyone else had a good time too. Our boat was fairly large with two main levels of seating: one even with the main deck so that you could look out on either side over the water, and the other below deck (which as a result was not visited by anyone even once during the trip). There was also a bow and stern people could hang out on, so long as they didn’t obstruct the captain’s view too badly. The most popular place from which to enjoy the voyage though was by far on top of the boat roof. It was a great place to take photos during the day, and by the end of the night pretty much every single person was up there enjoying the cool night air and the starry sky above. In true Bengali style (and utterly in opposition to the USA’s hyper safety rules), the boat crew never batted an eyelid at our being up there, and we all greatly appreciated this laxity.

On a different roof

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

The reason Catie and I walked to Panchlaish was so that we could have a “picnic” Iftar dinner (which we bought on the street along the way). The roof of Panchlaish is really nice and the building is right next to the jungle (as far as I can tell) so you can hang out up there until it gets dark and then watch for bats overhead. Dinner was delicious – I really hope I can get another chicken roll even after Ramadan is over – and I had a great time hanging out up there, taking photos, and watching people on the street below. We did see a number of large bats but I was too distracted trying to take pictures of some people working on a car at night, so my bat-capturing efforts were somewhat halfhearted. We’ll have to go back and try again sometime soon.

Edging my way to the streets of Chittagong

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Well, I’m getting closer… Slowly I inch my camera towards the actual streets of Chittagong. I hung out for a little while sitting in the driveway of AUW where Catie works. Turns out there was plenty to shoot right there! I was actually a little disappointed when Catie came down from work ready to leave. To my left were the men working on the building next-door. To my right were other men standing and talking on their cell phones with rickshaws zooming across M.M. Ali road in the background. Right in front of me was an eager young security guard who wanted me to take a photo of him doing his favorite thing to pass the time (playing an imaginary pen-flute), and promptly afterwards another of him (and his friend) giving an official salute. And finally, above were two of Catie’s coworkers yelling down to me from the roof.
